How to estimate a Pokémon card’s value

Identify the correct version, evaluate condition and interpret actual market sales.

01Identify the exact version

Start with the name, card number, set, language and variant: holo, reverse, promo, alternate art or another printing. Similar-looking cards can have very different values.

A meaningful price comparison requires matching the exact version.

  • Check the printed card number
  • Confirm set and language
  • Separate each printing or variant

02Assess actual condition

Centering, corners, edges and surface strongly influence market price. Small marks on the reverse or hairline scratches can matter.

Do not present an ungraded card as a certain “PSA 10 candidate.” Describe visible imperfections objectively and provide clear photos.

  • Inspect both sides
  • Photograph any flaws
  • Distinguish raw condition from an official grade

03Compare completed sales

Look for completed sales rather than sellers’ asking prices alone. Use several recent transactions where available, and account for language, condition, fees, region and sale date.

A single unusually high sale is not necessarily a realistic current selling price.

  • Match like with like
  • Review multiple transactions
  • Account for platform and shipping fees

04Raw card or graded card?

Certified cards may trade differently from raw versions. The achieved grade, buyer demand and grading company all influence value.

Include grading and shipping costs in your calculation: certification does not automatically create a profit.

  • Compare by company and grade
  • Add up all associated costs
  • Plan for a lower-than-expected grade

05When pre-grading can help

If you are unsure whether grading is worthwhile, pre-grading can highlight flaws before you commit to the expense. It does not replace professional authentication or a valuation based on sales.

Use CartesGradées pre-grading as a decision aid, not a guarantee of future grade or value.

For general information only. Check the grader’s official submission rules, fees and turnaround times before shipping.
