How to safely ship a card for grading

Sleeves, rigid supports, packaging and tracking: practical shipping precautions.

01Start with a clean workspace

Wash and dry your hands, clear a clean flat workspace, and photograph both sides of the card. Handle it by its edges and avoid rubbing the surface.

Avoid cleaning products or any treatment that could alter the card.

02Choose suitable inner protection

Gently slide the card into a clean, correctly sized soft sleeve (a “penny sleeve”). Then use a semi-rigid holder if the receiving grading company recommends one.

Never force the card into a holder; check whether top loaders or other supports are permitted.

  • Avoid dirty or damaged sleeves
  • Do not squeeze the card inside the holder
  • Follow the recipient’s holder requirements

03Prevent movement inside the parcel

Protect the holder between stiff cardboard sheets or suitable reinforcements, then cushion it to reduce movement. Use a strong outer box or mailer suited to its contents.

Keep adhesive tape away from the sleeve and card, and do not apply enough pressure to bend the holder.

04Select traceable shipping

Use an appropriate carrier, keep the shipping receipt and tracking number, and check coverage terms for loss or damage. Pay attention to declared-value requirements and exclusions.

Photograph the sealed parcel and shipping label. Keep proof of dispatch and submission correspondence.

  • Keep packing photos before closing
  • Use tracking to the destination
  • Check the carrier’s available insurance

05Follow the receiving company’s instructions

Your submission number, card list and shipping address must match the application. Always follow the receiver’s instructions if they differ from general guidance.

If you use CartesGradées pre-grading, follow that service’s specific instructions rather than sending your card as if it were a direct grading-company submission.

For general information only. Check the grader’s official submission rules, fees and turnaround times before shipping.
